Art in the Garden Tour 2011

Slip through the gate into a garden wonderland. Behind the tall cedar hedge is tranquil beauty and enchantment. A profusion of perennials, a multitude of interesting trees, espaliered fruit and an array of other edibles all tended with caring hands.

Artist Mike Wakefield: A seasoned and passionate photographic artist whose remarkable work captures the beauty and complexity of the world around us including natural, urban and industrial landscapes.

Artist Jennifer Harwood: A contemporary acrylic artist who keeps her work loose and carefree so you feel the energy in the colour and the brushstrokes. Mainly florals and landscapes, she portrays them in a moody impressionistic style bordering on abstraction.

2) GARDENER PAULINE DEANE & GORD & LOUISE GREEN
Near the top of the mountain, is a lovely terraced property, professionally tended, that features lots of beautiful rock work and a slate path through large clusters of daylilies, hostas, lavender, creeping thyme, irises, and tons of different grasses.

Artist Ann Mitchell: An art teacher for many years, Ann now paints for her own pleasure. Using oil, acrylic and watercolour, she particularly enjoys painting landscapes and bold florals.

Artist Shannon Leonard: A photographic artist whose interesting photos of nature are inspired by the natural beauty of the Lower Mainland. Her work features prints on stretched canvas as well as smaller unframed prints and art cards.

3) GARDENER LAWRENCE WICK
A remarkable and interesting exotic plant specialist and bonsai artist tends an eclectic mix of exotic and tropical plants and trees that he has collected. Wandering through his garden and chatting with Larry is like travelling to other parts of the world.

Artist Reyhaneh Bakhtiari: An internationally acclaimed artist who is a professionally trained oil painter, her diverse artwork reflects her subjects and embellishes her love for nature, beauty, culture, architecture and history.

4) GARDENER ANN PENTLAND
This master gardener has created a beautiful space filled with a broad array of plants, flowering shrubs and interesting trees including a paperbark maple, ginko, & katsura. Her new passion is edible gardening and she has moved onto the boulevards around her home.

Artist George Taylor: A creative artist who uses his vivid imagination and his sense of humour to create garden sculptures using wood, recycled metal, and found objects.

Artist Nicola Donaldson: A photographic artist and nature enthusiast, she uses her images to create lovely art cards and unique imagery on marble tiles.

5) GARDENER KASPER HOUSE
A large property featuring a remarkable organic edible garden that includes a willow plantation and mosaic accents. This garden is cared for by enthusiastic gardeners from the Cascadia Society, a life-sharing community for adults with special needs.

Artist John Winkler: An experienced clay artist who creates hand-thrown and constructed functional pottery that is both wood and gas fired. His sensitivity to the clay creates a deep sense of balance and motion which results in unique and beautiful shapes and colours.

Artist Vern Montgomery: An acrylic artist who paints rich, often humourous local scenes and celebrations with bold colour in a caricature style that captures the heart and makes you smile.

6) GARDENER MICHELLE & MICHAEL BINKLEY
A terraced garden features outstanding use of rock and stonework in this hidden paradise. This space encompasses a broad array of flowering shrubs, perennials, bulbs and climbers including wisteria, roses, clematis, winter jasmine, and grapes.

Artist Michael Binkley: This stone sculptor is internationally recognized for his works in marble, granite, limestone and jade. Michael’s work seduces the viewer’s eye, stirs the soul, and entices the viewer to touch. Visiting his home gallery is a moving experience.

Artist Eileen Fong: She explores beyond the brushstroke expression of Chinese painting techniques using other painting media including acrylic and encaustic wax to portray our beautiful surroundings and her love of nature.

7) GARDENER ANTHEA HINGLISH
This remarkable garden oozes into the lane and is jammed with an abundance of shrubs, bushes, and unique trees. Korean lilac, coral bark, Himalayan honeysuckle, ginko, magnolia, Fruit Salad tree, 5 Way Plum, and lots of berries are some of what you will see.

Artist Karen Ireland: A truly “artsy” individual who has worked in a variety of mediums, but is passionate about working with glass. She finds it alive and fascinating to work with in all forms. Enjoy her bird baths, ornaments, plates, and other sundries.

Artist Amber Boorman: A multi media artist who likes to explore a variety of art processes including painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture, sewing and mixed media.

Artist Danyne Johnston: Using watercolour and acrylics this painter likes to use bright colours, lots of sunlight and visual value contrasts in her depiction of seascapes, landscapes, florals, & still lifes.

Artist Eric Goldstein: A diverse artist who is presently using various coloured threads, acrylic paint and plaster to build beautiful canvases that are graphically influenced and have strong architectural rhythms.

Artist Oliver Harwood: A stone sculptor working in a variety of scale and materials, his work is both representational and metaphorical as he strives to bring attention to different ideas.

Artist Gordon Davis: Bold, brightly coloured acrylic landscapes and still life that verge on expressionism which depict a sense of joy and happiness.

Artist Martha Barker: An artist that loves to create starting with a ball of clay. Her functional pottery reflects her experimentation with different shapes, glazes, techniques and firings.

A beautiful professionally designed sustainable garden, it features xerioscaping, edible landscaping, mason bees and a herb garden on the roof. This award winning space creates a dramatic statement with an outdoor living room, lavender hedge, large ornamental grasses and a ton of alliums and rudbeckia.

Artist Linda Sharp: This talented artist hand-makes lamp worked glass beads which she likens to sculpting with liquid honey. She integrates silver, gold and copper wire and natural stones into these truly stunning nuggets of beauty.

Artist Amy Charalambopoulos: A photographic artist with a unique style that captures the subject in a creative and novel manner. She fuses imagination, artistic style, and photographic technique to create the perfect image.

Artist Maureen Coles: An accomplished acrylic painter and art teacher whose landscapes are inspired by the West Coast. “Painting gives me confidence, frees me and helps me find my balance!”

Artist Vanessa Lowe: A contemporary artist who likes to experiment with a variety of mediums. She often uses urban images applied to unexpected surfaces. Her current body of work involves photography and rigid Asian fans that create a peaceful, Zen like feel to them.

Artist Doris Biddle: A passionate and dedicated painter who has intense creative energy. It is demonstrated strongly in her big, bold, beautiful paintings of landscapes, still life and abstracts.

Artist Liz de Beer: A clay artist, who is strongly influenced by her African roots, she demonstrates a preference for simple but striking earthenware vessels, unglazed on the outside featuring a subdued surface colouration embellished with exterior carving.

Artist Alan Maples: Stunningly beautiful fine art photographic prints by a professional photographic artist. He believes in taking a creative and expressive approach to his subjects where the only constraints are light and time.

Artist Monica Shelton: Playful and enigmatic contemporary concepts and symbols using acrylic on canvas. The imagery is grounded in the natural world and aims to expand feeling and thought beyond the finite.

Artist Barry Shelton: Metaphorical or abstracted realism with energetic spontaneous textural ground of acrylic on canvas or panel – a mystical unity of simplicity and symbol, light and colours.

Located in the lovely Caulfield area, this is a beautifully tended space with large cedars and scalloped beds filled with flowering trees, shrubs, perennials, and interesting garden sculpture making this a warm and intimate garden.

Artist Marica Szeleczki: Very large, bold and beautiful landscape scenes done in oil pastel by an extremely competent artist who is passionate about her art reflecting her great love of the West Coast.
