“Kaurismäki’s ingenious pastiche of French populist poetic-realist dramas plumbs their styles and moods for enduring political substance.” – Richard Brody, THE NEW YORKER
In the titular French port city, sixty-year-old bohemian turned shoeshine man Marcel Marx (André Wilms) spends his days enjoying a drink at the local bar and bringing fresh baguettes home to his wife and faithful dog. When he befriends a young African immigrant who is on the run from a dogged police inspector with the demeanour (and fashion sense) of Claude Rains in Casablanca, Marcel determines to help his new friend by any means necessary-which means calling in a few favours from the neighbourhood. Master director Aki Kaurismäki's most joyful film in years is a charming modern fairy tale, where everyone does the right thing, deadpan humour is the norm and legendary French rock star Little Bob is available for impromptu gigs.
