Oranges and Sunshine

Set in the 1980’s, Oranges and Sunshine tells the story of Margaret Humphreys (Emily Watson), a social worker, who learns that thousands of children were illegally and silently deported from the UK to Australia in the 1940’s. These children were removed from the care of single mothers or homes deemed “unfit,” and told that their parents were dead. They were shipped across the ocean with the promise of “oranges and sunshine” only to be neglected, forced into hard labour, and brutally abused.

This heart wrenching drama is based on one woman’s real-life crusade to help displaced adults discover their true identities.
