CapU Textile Arts Grad Show

CityScape Community Art SpaceCapUTextile Arts Invitation

Capilano University Textile Arts Grad Show
Opening Reception:
Thursday, May 13, 2010, 7-9pm
May 14 to June 5

Students in the Textile Arts Program are encouraged to explore a wide variety of approaches and techniques. The works in the exhibition range from silk-screening, printing and various surface treatments with dyes and stitched designs, to woven, felted and knitted pieces. They function as clothing, interior design or art pieces and express a variety of ideas, from personal issues to global, social and ecological concerns. Of particular interest is the use of renewable resources, recycling, use of new technologies and the value making things by hand.

The exhibition includes wall pieces and sculptural works, garments and costumes as well as smaller decorative objects, hats, bags, shawls. While some works explore new materialsand approaches, others also show dedication to mastering traditional techniques. Increasingly Textile Arts is gaining renewed popularity with young people involved in felting, knitting, printing images on cloth and in using recycled material to create works that make an individual statement in opposition to mass-produced goods.
