Patterns: Hard and Soft

October 28-November 1, 2011

Opening reception: Thursday, October 27, 7-9pm

Artist Talk: Saturday, November 5, 1-2pm

This exhibition explores patterns created on hard and soft surfaces by four artists using diverse media such as fabric, canvas, clay and stoneware.

Artists: Enda Bardell, abstract painter creates metaphysical abstract hard-edged patterns with masking tape and luminous acrylic paint on supple canvas. Enda pushes the compositional boundaries right to the point before they collapse.

Jennifer Cooper, textile artist uses a variety of surface design techniques on cloth, including dyeing, folding, clamping and discharging. Then, adding stitching and embellishing creates soft and hard-edged patterns on cotton, linen, and silk. The result is vibrantly coloured textured patterns.

Celia Rice-Jones, potter creates platters and vessels with soft clay, giving surfaces for both loose and formal patterns using a variety of techniques. Her goal is for a form to retain evidence of its making inviting the user and ultimately adding richness to domestic routine.

Keith Rice-Jones, sculptor builds and assembles both hard edged and softer organic forms whose edges, surfaces and spaces create rhythms and repeated patterns. Keith’s design training is rooted in the Arts and Crafts tradition but he is also influenced by Bauhaus and modernism.
