Enjoy Entrelacs, a choreographic piece that is created in an interaction with public art – Alt-Shift has selected the Cathedral sculpture in Waterfront Park for this unique dance presentation.
Visual artists will also be on site leading art activities related to our connection to place.
ART+PLACE is a special project that proposes a choreographic piece called Entrelacs around artwork in public spaces. The project activates public space and community through dance by weaving steps and movement within the design of the sculpture, allowing bystanders to rediscover this place in a singular and poetic way. On a playground of variable geometry, Entrelacs weaves through its continually evolving performing space. Elastics interlace the natural architecture and urban surroundings, influencing the dancers’ trajectory and simultaneously enveloping and including observers in their journey. Echoing this moving architecture, a violinist begins a dialogue with the dancing bodies.
Come enjoy the performances as Alt-Shift re-imagines the Cathedral sculpture, created by Douglas Senft, installed in 1986.
Entrelacs emerged as a performance in Montreal’s Parc Marguerite-Bourgeoys in the summer of 2015. Inspired by Pierre Bourgault’s massive sculpture, a work of public art installed in the park, the dancers developed their capacity to adapt and renew their artistic creation. This experience also encouraged the public to rediscover public art in a respectful, poetic and fun way. Over the past two years, Entrelacs has been presented in various public spaces in Montreal as well as being featured as part of the Maison du Quebec’s 2016 programme in Saint-Malo, France. This is a unique opportunity to see this dance performance in North Vancouver, inspired by our iconic Cathedral sculpture that so well represents our natural landscape, and part of our cultural identity.
