With this series of still life paintings, Douglas explores the use of colour in a more expressive and energetic manner than in a realistic mode. The simple shapes of the fruit and the atmospheric lighting allow him the freedom to use colour values and hues in different ways. Some of these paintings are very exciting to paint – they use colour and the application of paint in a spontaneous way. Others are more considered, take more time, and are more realistic – included in this group to show a contrast with a less realistic treatment. The goal is to provide an unusual view of something that we are used to seeing in a habitual way every day.
