The North Shore International Film Series is presented by North Van Arts in cooperation with the Toronto International Film Festival. Throughout the year a series of TIFF selections are screened at Cineplex Odeon Park & Tilford Cinemas for special one-night-only viewings. Established in 2003, the North Shore International Film Series acts as a platform for unique cinematic experience, spotlighting quality Canadian, independent and foreign films.
North Van Arts is pleased to present feature films from Canada and around the world:
Leave No Trace | USA | September 12
A father and daughter live a perfect but mysterious existence in Forest Park, a beautiful nature reserve near Portland, Oregon, rarely making contact with the world. But when a small mistake tips them off to authorities, they are sent on an increasingly erratic journey in search of a place to call their own.
Transformer | CAN | September 26
Former US Marine and world record weightlifter Matt “Kroc” Kroczaleski was publicly outed as being transgender in 2015. The reaction was universal: her sponsors abandoned her, she was disowned by her parents, banned from competing, and she changed her name to Janae. This film follows Janae as she attempts to find her place in society. Initially wanting to strip off the muscle and become a much smaller looking woman, she found herself unable to lose the muscle she so desperately gained. She now finds herself living one day as an alpha male and the next day as a woman. Will Janae be able to handle her muscle relapses? Will her passage from being a male bring her the peace she’s looking for? Will society accept a 250lbs muscular woman? Is her path personal redemption or physical and psychological disaster?
The Wife | USA | October 10
Joan and Joe remain complements after nearly 40 years of marriage. Where Joe is casual, Joan is elegant. Where Joe is vain, Joan is self-effacing. And where Joe enjoys his very public role as the great American novelist, Joan pours her considerable intellect, grace, charm and diplomacy into the private role of a great man’s wife. As Joe is about to be awarded the Nobel Prize for his acclaimed and prolific body of work, Joan starts to think about the shared compromises, secrets and betrayals.
The Third Murder | JP | October 24
Well-known attorney Shigemori takes on the defense of murder-robbery suspect Misumi, who served jail time for another murder 30 years ago. Shigemori’s chances of winning the case seem low, as his client freely admits his guilt, even though he faces the death penalty if convicted. But as he digs deeper into the case, hearing the testimonies of the victim’s family and Misumi himself, Shigemori begins to doubt whether his client is actually the murderer.
The Children Act | UK | November 7
In the midst of a marital crisis, a High Court judge must decide if she should order a life-saving blood transfusion for a teen with cancer despite his family’s refusal to accept medical treatment for religious reasons.
