Caroline Chao is originally from the “capital of Canada”, Toronto, but now lives in beautiful North Vancouver. Her life thus far can be divided into four stages. She was first a student; second an electrical engineer; third a stay-at-home mom and fourth an artist. In her heart, she has been an artist all her life but has only recently had the courage to tell others. She has not had the fortune to attend an art college. Instead, she taught herself to draw at a young age, studied photography in high school and developed her painting skills under the mentorship of artist James Picard. When not creating art, she may be found hiking.
Caroline’s work, ‘Dog Mountain Powder’ is featured as the February image in the 2018 You Are Here Calendar. Dog Mountain, a short popular trail on Mt. Seymour to a stunning viewpoint, is possibly more enjoyable to hike in the winter than the summer. In the winter, snow covers the roots and rocks of the trail making it easier to traverse. Snow increases the tonal range of the landscape. The snow itself becomes a lovely canvas on which light paints subtle shadows and tones. And, there are no bugs.
