I paint what hooks my emotion and poses a technical challenge – or whatever I’m paid to, if commissioned. I have designed tattoos, painted on flower pots and one wall, created large and small canvases, and carried out many wishes on paper. I have also illustrated a children’s book. My own favourite subjects include ballet, fashion, birds, architecture, and people. The emotional tone of my work is most commonly sadness, neutrality, playfulness, and formerly, anger. Mostly, it’s “dark.” I’m compelled to combine my subjects in unconventional compositions, ranging in size from 30 x 36 to 6 x 4. Pencil, pencil crayon, acrylic, charcoal pencil, chalk, and pastel are my mediums of choice.
My art education began in high school with a commercial artist-turned-teacher. I took a few courses in university. I learned much throughout a ten year part time career as a nude model for the Alberta College of Art and Design as well as at the university and a few drop-in drawing groups. Of course, I look at art and experiment.
Other passions – writing, reading, rowing, and weight training – compete for my time and energy. I must explore what is possible in all my endeavors, especially that of reclaiming my health diet. I believe in being as happy as possible, and acting on intuition. For a living, I tutor. For company, I keep a Blue & Gold Macaw (large parrot), a fully feathered beauty, I hand-fed as a baby, and continue to hand feed at his 24 years of age.
